Mental health group’s founder to be honored
By KAREN VIGIL
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
The Mental Health Association of Pueblo will honor its founder, Jack Selway, at the group's annual fund-raising dinner on May 13.
Selway will receive the 2004 Robert Hawkins Award, named for the late superintendent of Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo.
Dinner proceeds will be awarded to a nonprofit organization chosen by Selway, according to Jack Wilson of the association.
Selway moved here in 1997 with his wife Sherry Koski, a Pueblo native, to work as a radio station news director.
He was the primary founder of the Mental Health Association and has recruited many members, Wilson said. He also began the local chapter of the Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association of Pueblo.
Selway created a Web site for the association and also maintains an independent Web site with information about mental health resources - http://www.puebloadvocacy.com.
Other nominees being recognized by the mental health association this year are:
Margie O'Leary, a therapist, part-time psychiatric instructor who retired from CMHIP after a 34-year career.
Al Byers, a local psychologist, prominent for his research relating to neurofeedback, attention deficit disorder, closed head injuries and chronic pain. Byers has trained and supervised many local health professionals.
Psychiatrist Elizabeth Stuyt, medical director of CMHIP's Circle Program, and senior instructor for the University of Colorado's Health Sciences Center psychiatry department.
The association's membership is made up of area mental health professionals and others concerned with improving the local quality of mental health care.
The group strives to eliminate the stigma of mental health illness and to increase access to treatment through education, advocacy and research development.
